As I mentioned at the wrenchfest I am having a buddy of mine fab me up a custom tie rod in a month or two. I have a question as far as size and strecgth go......How big and strong is too big and strong? What would stop us from using something sick like 1.5 inch solid bar or something crazy like that..would the weight of the steering components affect the steering or not. I was also thinking about beefing up the drag link and everything else while we were down there. Thoughts........
Damn! On an XJ, you gotta be kidding. LOL I don't know but I think it's a good question. I think the question is how BIG is too BIG? I'm starting to research info. on steering systems/mods. I'll let you know what i find. ;)

Bill I run a ZJ tie rod on my TJ it's quite a bit larger than stock and it helped with steering issues, it's not the complete fix but it is an improvement. One of the main problems with lifted Jeeps is the loss of the track bar and the draglink being parelel. The wider the gap the more the bumpsteer. A heavy duty tie rod removes some of the flex which attributes to unstable steering but the bumpsteer issue will still be there. Of coarse anything that is done is an improvement on the corporate steering crap.
It's funny when I drive the XJ with the stock tires< I can feel the same movement in it's front end but not as exagerated as in my TJ. This just proves to me that the "Y" steering is a piece of crap to begin with. Doesn't matter if an XJ or a TJ they have the same steering components and the same steering problems.

I sure wish I had an extra 950 bucks laying around to spend on a steering system. It does look pretty beefy. I have not experienced any real problem with bump steer. I need to upgrade because I wrecked the factory rod after only two trips wheelin. It's funny I ran stock steering on the 88 for two years after lift and tires and inumerable wheelin trips and never bent it at all

I know what you mean on the $950.00, that's why I run the ZJ set up. I never have bent a tie rod but the larger ZJ set up helps with keeping the meats on the road.
