I'm looking for a used Dana 30 ARB
If anyone knows someone with one let me know
Just an fyi for you Slater. Have you researched any issues with the D30 and the ARB?
I have heard but have no 1st hand experience that the D30 diff housing flexes too much and has led to issues like the ARB unlocking. I also heard Alloy axles are highly recommended in the D30 when going to a spool or locker, but pricey. I believe after the cost of trussing & alloy axles you are very close to the cost of swapping a Cherokee D44 which is obviously stronger.
I am not sure if the same issue holds true for the OX locker.
Without running lockouts I would not advise a Detroit locker, ask me how I know. lol

Cherokees had a D44 front at some point? Did you mean Wagoneer by any chance?
I know the FSJ Wagoneers did and I believe some XJ cherokees did as an option, but I may be wrong on the XJ info as I am not up on them. Maybe I'm confusing the XJ HP D30 with a D44.

I have also been looking for a used dana 44, but by the time I build it up with an ARB and new gears it never seems like I'm saving that much over buying a new one. If you know of a used Front Dana 44 for a TJ with an arb I would be interested in that as well
DOH!!!:slaphead:
The XJ's with the tow package or Metric ton package had a D44 rear, not front axle.
The only way to find a stock TJ ready front D44 is from a rubicon. IMO they aren't worth the money people are asking for them. The rubi 44 and your D30 have 90% the same parts and they share the same weaknesses. The rubi has a D44 R&P and that is where the D44 parts stop. The rest of it is the same D30 parts or same strength. The rubi locker is suspect at best for reliability and it is NOT an ARB made piece. So by the time you spend $1000 for a rubi front, and another $1000 for an ARB you are less than $500 away from a built D60 so whats the point.
Another upgrade is a HP D30 from an XJ.

I have the HP D30 out of an XJ as well as the upgraded 30 spline chromoly shafts. I haven't had any problems with my locker or axles to date and have been quite pleased with the setup. It is a direct fit into a TJ so it makes things quite simple for the swap. I agree with the D44 as its not much better than the D30 as it shares many of the same weaknesses. I am not a hard wheeler and take it easy most of the time knowing that the front axle tubes are always at risk for bending. However, at times I do pound on it and have not experienced any problems thus far...knock on wood.

Hey! They come with D44 inner shafts! The thing I know about the locker is that the front is tougher than the rear, as it does not have a LSD. JP mag said the lockers are pretty tough Fiji built units. Why would you want to put an ARB into a Rubi axle? I'm going to agree that they are overpriced however.
The inner shafts are not genuine D44. They have the D44 splines but neck down and have the same u-joint and ear size as a D30 which is one of the notorious weaknesses of a D30. The front stock locker does not break as much because the bulk of the power is transferred through the rear axle most of the time.
Fiji- yep that name is the epitome of quality made heavy duty drivetrain products.:lol2:
Nice place to visit for vacation though.
I will say the stock rubi locker does have one advantage; It operates on less than 10psi. So if you compressor should fail you could just activate the locker by blowing on the hose with your mouth.

The 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton D44 ("real D44") axle shafts have larger u-joints and thus larger ears to accommodate the bigger u-joints. If you ever get a chance take a look at the knuckle u-joints on a full size truck D44 and you'll see.
